In 1968, a group of predominately Puerto Rican community activists
successfully stared down the bulldozers of urban renewal and organized
to gain control over the development of their neighborhood-- a seminal
moment in the history of affordable housing, civil rights and community
organizing in the city of Boston. Today, Villa Victoria, the 435 unit
housing community of 3,000 multicultural residents that they developed,
remains an affordable housing oasis in Boston’s gentrified and
affluent South End neighborhood, because of the efforts of Inquilinos
Boricuas en

Mission & Strategy
Inquilinos Boricuas en Acción (IBA) is a dynamic community
building agency dedicated to increasing the social and economic
power of individuals and families through education, economic development,

diverse
affordable housing communities.

comments: Have you ever wondered about your
ancestors? How did they live and work in days long passed? Who were
your great-grandparents? Was your family really "una familia" in
Puerto Rico? These are questions we ask ourselves but just don't
know how to begin to find the answers. Most second and third generation
Puerto Rican Americans know very little about their own cultural
history, and much less about their family history. Genealogy is
the study of this history, the search of one's family lineages.
Who knows? You may be related to or descended from Roberto Clemente,
Luis Muñoz Marin, Albizu Campos, maybe even Cofresí the pirate,
or Cristóbal Colón!

involved in many projects to help beginner researchers find their
way through the various resources available to them as more and

out of state parades and events. We always opened for performances.
We are a non-profit organization ran by volunteers of the parents
of the performers and my sister and I. We represent Latin America
and its culture and dances but mostly perform typical Puerto Rican
dances like Bomba y plena. We also love merengue. |

involvement in San Antonio, Texas, while promoting our proud Puerto
Rican heritage. CDPR annually commemorates the anniversary of the
discovery of Puerto Rico with a Gala Ball and a proclamation issued

are formally introduced into society, and "Las Octavitas"-

This dance company was created by Olga "Ongui"
Chavez in Killeen Texas in 1995. She wanted to provide a venue for
our youth who were born or raised away from the island and knew
little of our culture. When Ongui returned to Luquillo, Puerto Rico,
the group ended. It has recently been resurrected in San Antonio
by her son, and Co-Founder of the Non-Profit organization, Jesus
"CJ" Calzada and his wife Audrey R. Calzada. Our focus
is on Puerto Rican Folkloric dance. We are a youth dance group ranging
in ages from 7 to 18. Our mission remains the same - to provide
a venue for our children to learn more about our culture and history.
