(1851-1880) Gautier Benítez was born in Caguas, Puerto Rico on November 12, 1851. He studied and graduated from the Spanish military school in Toledo, Spain. After leaving the military Gautier Benítez devoted his time and energies to his poetry and colaborated with la Revista Puertorriqueña and El Progreso. Gautier Benítez became one of Puerto Rico’s best romanticists. Among his poems are Canto a Puerto Rico, Insomnio, Renacimiento and A Puerto Rico: Ausencia. He died in San Juan on January 24, 1880.
